How Much Do Bloggers Make from Ads? A Realistic Look
How much do bloggers make from ads? A realistic breakdown of display-ad income by monthly pageviews, the factors that change it, and how to estimate yours.
Display ads are the most common way blogs earn money, and the honest answer to how much they pay is that it depends almost entirely on two things: how much traffic you get, and how much that traffic is worth. Once you understand the simple maths behind it, you can set realistic expectations for your own site.
The number that decides everything: RPM
Ad income comes down to a metric called RPM, which is revenue per 1,000 pageviews. The formula is simple:
monthly income = (monthly pageviews ÷ 1,000) × RPM
RPM varies a lot by niche and audience, but display RPMs commonly fall between about $5 and $40. If you are new to the term, our guide on what RPM is and how blog ad revenue works explains it in full.
Realistic income by traffic level
Here is what monthly ad income looks like at a $15 RPM, which is a reasonable mid-range figure for many niches.
| Monthly pageviews | Est. monthly income | |---|---| | 10,000 | $150 | | 25,000 | $375 | | 50,000 | $750 | | 100,000 | $1,500 | | 250,000 | $3,750 |
Change the RPM and every figure changes with it. At a $25 RPM, 100,000 pageviews earns about $2,500 rather than $1,500.
What moves your RPM up or down
- Niche. Finance, insurance and software attract high-paying advertisers. Entertainment and general lifestyle pay less.
- Audience location. Visitors from the US, UK, Canada and Australia are usually worth more to advertisers.
- Season. Ad budgets peak in the last quarter of the year and dip in January.
- Ad network. Premium networks tend to pay more than basic ones, but often require a minimum traffic level to join.
A note on expectations
Small blogs rarely earn life-changing money from ads alone, and that is normal. Most bloggers who earn well combine ad income with affiliate links, their own products or services. Ads are a solid, passive baseline that grows as your traffic grows.

The takeaway
Blog ad income is pageviews divided by 1,000, multiplied by your RPM. Grow either number and your earnings grow with it. Set expectations from your real traffic and niche, treat ads as one income stream among several, and focus on the traffic growth that lifts every figure at once.
